Telangana’s News Update Mega Eco Park Plan at Kancha Gachibowli Faces

The Telangana government’s grand plan to develop one of the world’s largest eco parks at Kancha Gachibowli has hit a roadblock, with students and faculty of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) raising strong objections. The project, which aims to convert 2,000 acres—including part of the UoH campus—into a sprawling green space, is being seen by many as a diversionary tactic after the state’s earlier plan to auction 400 acres for IT parks faced massive backlash 26.

From IT Parks to Eco Parks: A Sudden U-Turn

Initially, the Telangana government had planned to auction 400 acres of green cover near the UoH campus for IT infrastructure, triggering protests from students and environmentalists. The Supreme Court intervened, halting tree-felling activities after satellite images showed alarming deforestation in just three days 9. Facing legal and public pressure, the government now claims it will instead develop a massive eco park, complete with wildlife zones, walking trails, and even a turtle park 26.

However, students are not convinced. UoH Students’ Union President Umesh Ambedkar called the move a “diversionary tactic” to shift focus from the destruction already caused. “Why can’t they let things be as they are? We are fighting for our land and university,” he said 211.

Relocation Woes: Is the Deal Fair?

As part of the new plan, the government has proposed relocating UoH to a “Future City” near Srisailam, offering 100 acres and Rs 1,000 crore for a new campus. But students argue this is an unfair exchange—giving up 1,600 acres of their current land for a much smaller plot 611.

University officials remain cautious, stating they have not received any official communication. “If such a proposal comes, it will be discussed by the executive council,” a senior official said 6. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has demanded answers from the Telangana Chief Secretary on the “urgent need” for deforestation, warning of personal liability if rules are violated 15.

Environmental Concerns vs. Development

Environmentalists stress that Kancha Gachibowli is not just “unproductive land” (as the government claims) but a critical lung space for Hyderabad, home to peacocks, deer, and rare flora. The area also recharges groundwater and prevents urban flooding 710.

Despite the government’s promise of a “micro-ecosystem” in the eco park, experts like Dr. Donthi Narasimha Reddy argue that natural forests cannot be replaced. “Once destroyed, such ecosystems take centuries to revive,” he said 7.

What’s Next?

With the Supreme Court monitoring the case and student protests intensifying, the Telangana government faces a tough balancing act between development and conservation. For now, all tree-felling remains stalled, but the future of Kancha Gachibowli—and UoH—hangs in the balance.
